Dear so and so:
My, what wonderfully creative ideas you have for the reunion! You should consider becoming a professional planner!
Unfortunately, due to budgetary constraints, we are unable to have Cirque du Soleil perform at the reunion. We’re just a small group trying to relive our youth but please, by all means, keep those ideas coming!
So the big wedding of Luke & Laura was 25 years ago today. To celebrate, they did it all over again today.
Now, maybe the guys from our class have no idea what I’m talking about or who Luke & Laura are but most of the gals will surely remember how they spent at least part of that summer before senior year – watching General Hospital! The Luke & Laura story line had everyone in a tizzy that summer. Once school started, it was reported that colleges weren’t scheduling classes during the hour that the show aired, because they knew no one would show up. Even Prince Charles & Princess Diana (the other huge “that’s what dreams are made of” event of that season) sent champagne! Lots of high school girls called in “sick” that day with “Luke & Laura-itis.” Others, with parents who weren’t buying it, had to settle for taping the show. It was huge!
Fast forward 25 years and curiosity got the best of me, so I made time to tune in and watch the show from my desk. Fortunately, this time around, the ceremony only took about ten minutes and I was back to work. Some times waxing nostalgic falls flat.
But it did get me to thinking about other stuff from back in the day, so after I picked up “the chosen fetus” from school, we took a road trip – to ROADSIDE. Yeah – I went to Roadside with my kid – at 3:00 in the afternoon! How uncool is that?
Even more uncool was that I forgot how to get there and mistakenly took Old Spanish Trail instead of Fremaux. (I’ve always confused those two and I live here!) It ended up being a really long but scenic road trip!
Knowing that that area had been decimated by the storm, I guess I just wanted to see if it was even still there. Finally arriving, I was happy to see that not much had changed. I sat in the car for a while, just taking it all in and while there are still a lot of downed trees and storm debris, otherwise it looks about the same as it did when we last saw it through inebriated eyes! Ok I admit it; I got a wee bit teary-eyed on this trip down memory lane but in my defense, I’m a blood donor and today was platelets day, so I wasn’t fully at myself.
Known today as The Lousiana Nature Conservancy, a group of volunteers from Chevron built a boardwalk on the site back in 1998 for bird watchers to do their thing. It seems the area is home to a bald eagle or duck billed dodo bird or some kind of endangered something, about which I know nothing because I’m a card carrying Republican and you know how we are about such things. Anyhoo, the boardwalk has been cleaned up post-storm and from October to April, bird lovers can go there and get all hot and bothered about a bird. Hey, whatever floats your boat! I just wonder if they bring beer.
Maybe, just maybe, we should have our class picnic at Roadside instead of Heritage Park! It’s not until July, so it’s not like we’d be disturbing the little birdies or anything.
And now, some sad news…for those in our class no longer living in Slidell – count your blessings. Our Post-Katrina Post-Apocalyptic little corner of the world that we call home has been dealt yet another blow. WRNO is no more!
In what can only be described as one more cruel joke of many being played on us here, by what I like to call “the powers that be that shouldn’t be,” we awoke from our slumber a few mornings ago, only to find that the same station that lauded itself as “The Rock of New Orleans” for as long as anyone can remember, is now TALK RADIO! Talk about your rude awakening!
So let’s review: Luke and Laura – still together. Charles and Diana – not. Roadside – still there. RNO – not!
I guess two outta four ain’t bad but I’d still rather hear Meatloaf in the morning instead of mindless babble.
If Susie leaves Slidell High at 8PM on May 22, 1982, how long will it take her to figure out when her 25th reunion is?
Repeat after me…
82 + 10 = 1992
82 + 20 = 2002
82 + 25 = 2007
No, it’s not “new math.”
Not long after the ten year reunion, I ran into “Susie.” She was conspicuously absent from the event. When I mentioned that we missed her at our little soiree, her response was, “Well, I would have come but I didn’t know anything about it.”
Huh? Can ya add?
Be damned, if it didn’t happen again right after the twenty year reunion! Maybe Susie rode the little orange bus to school!
Look, we all took the same math in high school. We all can count! Even if you live in Istanbul, you can still google “slidell high school,” get their phone number, call them and get the reunion lowdown.
Nevertheless, for Susie’s sake and any of our other classmates who find themselves to be “mathematically challenged,” I have sent reunion notices to every newspaper, television and radio station in our area, as well as any and all related websites (at least the ones that remain user-friendly) – which will take it global. Save sky writing it, I think we’ve covered our bases on press releases.
The Grand High Knick Knack 25R82 Reunion Committee (two chics & a guy & now a few other kind souls) are feverishly checking and cross-referencing email addys that we currently have for classmates, in an effort to at least try to reach as many of the class as we possibly can.
So, if any of you happen to run into “Susie” before the reunion, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, please clue her in on the reunion dates.
Should you run into her in the days following our reunion in July, feigning not knowing anything about it, please feel free to contact the RocknRoll Army, so that they can immediately take her to Gitmo for a little math repatriation – Tiger style!
This being Veterans Day, we want to take this time to send a huge shout out to those members of the Class of ’82 who have honorably served our country in the armed forces and continue to do so, especially Clif Sawyer, who is currently serving in Iraq. A sincere “thanks” for all that you do!
And to those who served “honorably” in the Rock n Roll Army back in the day… No, this does not qualify you for Veteran’s benefits!
The Grand High Knick Knacks Reunion Committee (made up of two chics and a guy) are pleased to announce:
The SHS Class of ’82 25th Reunion will take place Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21, 2007.
Friday night we will have a “Meet & Greet” at The Wine Market (Doug Reker’s place) on Gause @ 7PM.
Saturday, there will be a family picnic at Heritage Park on Front St. behind the Train Depot @ 12 noon.
Saturday night, we will meet at Palmettos Bayou Bar & Grill behind Heritage Park @ 7PM
Further details coming soon!
Well, it’s Back to Bali one more time as we make plans for the 25th Reunion of the Slidell High School Class of 1982! Yes, it has been 25 years but before you start feeling too antiquated, consider that in 2007-08, Slidell High will be celebrating it’s 100th anniversary! But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.
This site is for the members of the Class of 82 to gather, offer suggestions and stay informed about the upcoming reunion, as well as a place to catch up on what everyone is up to these days. We hope that you will bookmark this site and refer to it often, as this will be the main repository for all things “reunion,” henceforth to be referred to as 25R82!
As plans are made, they will be posted here. Suggestions are welcomed and encouraged. Quagmires will be debated until resolved.
We plan to begin posting details shortly, so check back soon. In the meantime, pull out those old yearbooks and ponder this; bell bottoms, feathered hair and camouflage (think RocknRoll Army) are all the rage again. Go figure.
